Dining Out With Your Dog for the First Time
Your dog’s first restaurant meal sets the tone for every outing after it. Keep the first one short, calm and positive, and you build a dog that settles happily wherever you go.
Practise before the real thing
Before a full meal, do a few short sessions at a quiet outdoor café or a friend’s table. Ask your dog to settle on a mat, reward calm behaviour, and keep each session brief. The goal is for “restaurant” to mean “lie down and relax”.
Exercise first
Take your dog for a good walk before you go. A dog that has stretched its legs and emptied out is far more likely to settle than one arriving full of energy.
Keep the first visit short
Choose an off-peak time, order one course, and leave while it is still going well. Ending on a calm, positive note matters more than finishing a long meal.
Bring the essentials
- A settle mat or blanket your dog already knows
- Water and a collapsible bowl
- Pre-packaged treats or food in a disposable bowl
- Waste bags
- A favourite chew to keep your dog occupied
During the meal
Keep your dog on a leash no longer than 1.5 metres, settled beside or under the table and out of the walkway. Reward quiet, calm behaviour. Do not feed your dog from the restaurant’s plates or let it up onto the table.
Watch for stress signals
Panting, pacing, whining or constant standing up are signs your dog has had enough. Take a short break outside, and if it is not settling, end the visit early. A calm exit beats a stressful meal.
